Secret Santa: credit that fits the budget and the person

Next year Your group sets the date of the swap. (2027)

A Secret Santa swap has two rules: a fixed budget and a name you drew out of a hat. The office, the friends’ group or the family chat sets the date, so it differs for everyone. The hard part is buying for someone you barely know without spending more than the limit or ending up with a novelty mug nobody wants.

Credit solves most of that. If the budget is £10, a low amount on Xbox credit, Google Play or Robux fits it exactly. If the budget is £20 or £25, a Nintendo eShop or Amazon card fits too. The price bands further down are built from the amounts brands really sell in pounds, so you can see at a glance which cards fit the limit.

Think about what your person does at lunch or on the way home. A colleague who games on the train gets more from console or Google Play credit. Someone who orders lunch in gets a Deliveroo or Just Eat card. A friend who listens to podcasts or watches series gets app or Disney+ credit. Each card is spent with that brand only.

Check the account and the rule on the brand page before you pay. Console and app credit only works on a UK account. Gift cards are spent on the brand’s UK site or app. If you are not sure about the platform, pick a broader brand in the treats group instead.

Any service fees for gaming credit, subscriptions and gift cards are shown before payment; mobile top-ups and prepaid vouchers carry a small fee shown before you pay, which matters with a tight budget. After confirmed payment the code is e-mailed to you, so you can wrap it in an envelope for the swap.

1. For the gamer

Credit for the console or game they already play. Check the platform first: PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo credit only works on a UK account of that platform. In-game currency such as Robux or V-Bucks is spent inside that one game, on the player’s own account.

2. For the student paying without a card

A prepaid voucher lets someone pay online in pounds without a bank card. Each voucher works at its own partner sites, so match it to where they want to spend. It is a common way for younger players to pay for games when nobody wants to share a parent’s card.

3. For the commuter on pay as you go

Phone credit keeps data and calls going on the train and the bus. You need the right network and the mobile number that gets the top-up. It suits anyone on pay as you go who would rather not run out of data halfway through the journey.

4. For apps, films and streams

Google Play credit on their phone or a streaming service they watch. It sits on their own account, so it has to be a UK account. It works well for someone who already pays for films, music or apps and would like a month or two covered.

5. For food, rides and treats

Gift cards for a takeaway, a taxi, clothes or a break. Each card is spent with the named brand only, on its UK site or app. These are the cards to pick when you know their favourite takeaway, shop or way of getting around.

How it works

  1. 1Pick the situation that sounds like the person and open the brand page that fits what they already use.
  2. 2Read the region rule on that page: account country, network or UK site. The currency is always pounds sterling.
  3. 3Choose one of the listed amounts. After confirmed payment the code is sent to you by e-mail, and you decide how and when to pass it on.
  4. 4Keep the e-mail until the code has been redeemed, so the person can check the code again if something goes wrong on their account.

Frequently asked questions

What fits a £10 Secret Santa budget?
A card with a £10 or lower amount on its UK ladder, such as Xbox credit, Amazon or Robux. The price bands on this page show which brands have one.
What if I barely know the person?
Choose by something you have noticed: they game, they order lunch, they stream series. Then pick one brand in that group.
Does a service fee push me over the budget?
Any service fees for gift cards and gaming credit are shown before payment. Mobile top-ups and prepaid vouchers do, so check the total before you pay.
How do I wrap a digital code?
Print the code or write it on a card and put it in an envelope. The e-mail comes to you, so the swap stays secret.
When do I receive the code?
By e-mail after confirmed payment. No delivery time is promised, so do not wait until the morning of the swap.
Can I choose any amount?
Only the fixed amounts a brand sells in pounds. They are listed on each product page.
Is console credit a safe choice?
Only if you know the platform. Otherwise Google Play or takeaway credit is a better fit for someone you do not know well.
Can the recipient use it abroad?
The cards on this page are for UK accounts and UK sites. The brand page explains any region rule.
Can one person buy for the whole group?
Yes, as long as each code is ordered separately. Each code comes by e-mail to the buyer.
What if the recipient already has the brand?
Credit simply adds to their balance or is spent on their next order, so owning the brand already is not a problem.
