Spotify gift card unavailable: what to give instead

Spotify has stopped or limited gift card sales in several markets while demand kept going. This guide explains what you can still do when you want to give someone music.

Redeeming an existing code

If you still have a Spotify code, redeem it at spotify.com/redeem while logged into the account that should receive the credit. It is offset against the next Premium charges. If the subscription runs through an app store or a telecom provider, it has to be switched to direct Spotify billing first.

App store credit as a replacement

A common replacement is a Google Play card. If the recipient pays for Spotify Premium through Google Play, that credit covers the subscription directly. A Google Play card does not work on an iPhone.

Other music services

If you want the gift to be usable straight away, look at services that do sell cards, such as Tidal or Deezer. For someone who has not settled on a service yet, that is often a nicer gift than credit that only lands in the right place after some fiddling.

Frequently asked questions

Can I gift Spotify Premium without a gift card?
Yes, with app store credit on the recipient's device, provided the subscription is billed through that store.
Does a Spotify code work on a family plan?
The credit lands on the main account holder's account and is offset against that plan's charges, family plans included.
