Buying a gift card and paying later with Klarna: is that possible?

Pay-later has become normal in the Netherlands, so the question follows naturally: can I buy a gift card with Klarna and pay later? The answer depends on the product type and on the provider's risk assessment.

Why digital codes are an exception

A digital code is usable after confirmed payment and irreversibly. Once redeemed the value is gone and nothing can be recovered. That is why pay-later providers treat digital credit as a high-risk category and often do not offer the option at all, or only for smaller amounts and existing customers.

When it does work

Where pay-later is offered, the provider assesses each order itself on amount, address and payment history. A refusal comes from that assessment, not from the shop. You can still complete the order with iDEAL, card or a prepaid voucher.

Alternatives that always work

iDEAL is the fastest and most used route in the Netherlands, and a prepaid voucher works when you would rather not leave bank or card details. Any product service fee is always shown upfront.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay for a gift card in instalments?
For digital codes that is rarely possible, for the same reason pay-later is offered only sparingly.
Why was my request refused?
The pay-later provider makes that assessment itself and does not share the reason with the shop. Pick another payment method to complete the order.
