Xbox Game Pass explained, which tier you need

Xbox Game Pass is a subscription to a library of games rather than a purchase per title. There are several tiers, and the difference lies mainly in which devices you play on and in extras such as online multiplayer and cloud gaming.

The tiers side by side

The console tier gives access to the library on an Xbox, the PC tier on Windows. The most expensive tier combines both, adds online multiplayer, and lets you stream games to a phone, tablet or browser.

Paying with a prepaid code

You don't have to link a credit card. An Xbox Game Pass code or Xbox credit extends the subscription by a fixed period, so nothing renews automatically and you're never charged unexpectedly.

Redeem codes in the Microsoft Store on your console or on the website under Redeem a code; the time is added to your account immediately.

What to watch for

Games leave the library regularly, so a title you're halfway through can disappear. Progress and saves are kept if the title returns later or if you buy it outright.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stack codes for several months?
Yes, multiple codes for the same tier add up, subject to a maximum amount of prepaid time.
Does a code from another country work?
No, a code is tied to your account's region; always buy the version for your Microsoft account's country.
Does the subscription renew after a code runs out?
No, without a linked payment method access simply ends when the prepaid period is over.
