Topping up a Dutch SIM from abroad

Topping up a Dutch prepaid number while you're abroad goes wrong the moment a shop asks for a Dutch payment method or a local address. A top-up code sidesteps that, because the code is country-bound but the purchase is not.

Why a code works where local payment often doesn't

Operators usually sell credit through local payment methods such as iDEAL. A top-up code is a separate product: you buy it with whatever payment method you have, then redeem it against the Dutch number.

Step by step

Pick the number's operator, pick the amount, pay, and receive the code by e-mail. Then redeem it in the operator's app, on their website, or by dialling their top-up code; the operator then adds the credit to the number.

You don't need the SIM in your own phone for this; you can also top up on someone else's behalf.

Mind the country version

A code is tied to the operator's country. A Lycamobile code from another country will not work on a Dutch Lycamobile number, even though the brand is the same. Always pick the Dutch version explicitly.

Vanlige spørsmål

Can I top up while roaming abroad?
Yes, you redeem the code over any data connection or by dialling the operator's short code.
Do I need a Dutch bank account?
No, you pay for the code with whatever method you have, even without a Dutch account or credit card.
How fast does the credit arrive?
The operator adds the credit as soon as the code is redeemed; we do not promise a time.
