Redeeming an existing code
If you still have a Spotify code, redeem it at spotify.com/redeem while logged into the account that should receive the credit. It is offset against the next Premium charges. If the subscription runs through an app store or a telecom provider, it has to be switched to direct Spotify billing first.
App store credit as a replacement
The most common replacement is a Google Play or Apple gift card. If the recipient pays for Spotify Premium through their phone's app store, that credit covers the subscription directly. Pick the card that matches the device: a Google Play card does not work on an iPhone, and vice versa.
Other music services
If you want the gift to be usable straight away, look at services that do sell cards, such as Apple Music, Tidal or Deezer. For someone who has not settled on a service yet, that is often a nicer gift than credit that only lands in the right place after some fiddling.
